Wonders of the World

Level: Intermediate I

Class: It can be used anytime on Unit 3 or as a substitute for Free Talk 3.

Aim: It helps getting students more comfortable with small group discussion and also helps to develop reading skills – the text is taken from Wikipedia, so it´s authentic material. It covers the whole vocabulary of the unit about natural features and it also covers the superlative structure. The small presentation in the end is good for them to get more comfortable about talking in front of other people.

How: The teacher divides the class in three groups. They are: Ancient World Wonders, Middle-ages Wonders and Modern World Wonders. Each group receives the respective wonder pictures and also a small description of the Wonder from Wikipedia. The first activity is to match the picture with the description. After doing that, students have to look for “the highest Wonder”, “the largest Wonder”, “the most beautiful Wonder”, always considering their own Wonders. The teacher can make a comparative label in the board, so all the Wonders (from all “worlds”) would appear to the whole group. Then, the groups have to elect two Wonders to represent the Earth. During this election, they have to justify their choice. To conclude, students have to present their “favorite Wonder” to the other groups, giving characteristics and also the justification for that choice.

Comments: Have in mind that this activity takes time. Try to explain everything before so students don´t get lost during the process. It´s also good to establish time for each step. Walk around the class helping the groups with some vocabulary but also paying attention if they are really speaking in English.
